Item Refiner
An Item Refiner is a special NPC found in various locations around Acronia. They offer synthesis and item opening services for players.
Item unlocking
When you find any sealed box type items, such as Wooden Box 1 or Treasure Chest 1, you can take it to an Item Refiner and he will open it for a fee. Players below level 16 have access to this for free.
An alternative to using an Item Refiner is to find a Ranger or Treasure Hunter with the Unlock skill (learned at job level 40), and have them open the item for you.
Sometimes locked items have very valuable items inside of them, other times they will have items worth less than the box itself. So there is a degree of chance involved when deciding whether to open a sealed box, or simply sell it to a vendor for a guaranteed amount gold.
The items found in sealed boxes range from equipment, becoming more frequent with treasure chests and containers, to hair stylist brochures, to simple arrows. Often you will get unidentified items, which are basically useless. These unidentified items should be taken to an Appraiser who will convert it into the real item.
Synthesis services

The item refiner will let players create (synthesize) items for which they have the ingredients (sometimes called catalyst items) for. You must have at least 1 of the required ingredients in your characters inventory before an item recipe will be visible. The cost varies, starting from 0g, ranging to many items in the 100 and 1000 g cost, and a few items (not sure) above. Synthesis may require anywhere between several of one item, or up to 6 different items (unconfirmed, but there are 6 slots).
