Wiki Upgrade?

I've been wondering for a long time and I might've noticed you hinting at it a couple of times, but do you have an idea when you'll be upgrading the Wiki? A few nice (like parser functions lolz) things don't work the way they're supposed to the way things are... ~ Tasky 11:06, 10 August 2009 (CDT)

Yes, there is a wiki upgrade coming. This is the PHP 4 version of the wiki, which as you have noticed does not support parser functions (i spent so much time debugging my fist templates before i figured it out lol).
I have two options:
 1. Upgrade PHP and the wiki on this server - and take the risk of the site breaking for an undetermined length of time. I have to ask the hosting company to do the PHP upgrade, then I have to do the database schema update and wiki software upgrade.
 2. Move to another server - this is what I am planning right now. It requires me setting up a new server, but it will be as simple as locking this install so there will be no new edits, copying the database and files to the new server and running the update there. Then I just switch the DNS and people will start seeing the new install. This will also be on a much faster server, the site will respond much, much, MUCH faster.
Time frame: Some time in the next week or two. I already have a server lined up, I just need to spend the time setting it up, installing the services, setting up the firewall, etc.
--Arhon 12:03, 10 August 2009 (CDT)
Actually, screw the week or two thing... I've been working on the new server for the last 5 or 6 hours. I'm hoping to have it fully operational tomorrow, then I'll move the site on wednesday or thursday. It's MUCH faster, going to be a world of difference for response time, I hope. =D --Arhon 01:23, 11 August 2009 (CDT)
Update: I've got the new server fully operational with a copy of the latest wiki version running a copy of our database with all of the images. This took longer than I expected, there were a few little issues that came up. However, it seems to be working great. I'm thinking that I will make the switch sometime this weekend. Let me know if you want to test it and I'll PM you a link. --Arhon 22:04, 12 August 2009 (CDT)
Update 2: Sorry I haven't been adding much to the wiki, its been hectic. I've got one last issue for the wiki conversion pinned down. We will be changing the database schema from latin1 to binary when we move and it takes some time to fix up the database export before I can do the import and upgrade. I've done this several times now and I think I've finally got all of the bugs worked out. It's a smooth process, just time-consuming. I'm still hoping to migrate the wiki to the new server this weekend. --Arhon 00:08, 14 August 2009 (CDT)
Wiki upgrade complete! --Arhon 00:55, 17 August 2009 (UTC)

World Maps and Fields

Seeing as there's Acronia, a Titania world, and a Dominion world. I've decided to just let World Map redirect to World Map (Acronia) and started on World Map (Titania) and World Map (Dominion), although I suppose going to World Map could bring up a kind of disambiguous thing and show the links to the three world maps. I'm also planning on adding dungeon locations, map elements, airship locations, spirit/fairy locations, and map exit/entrances at a glance to the World Map article on separate maps. I just thought I'd bring that up to avoid confusion. The problem is whether to include the Titania/Dominion cities, fields, and dungeons on the same pages as the Acronia ones, and how to organize them if they will. It could be tough having to reword all the "see also" sections and headings for the existing pages to be inexclusive to Acronia. I need a second opinion on this. ~~ Tasky 13:06, 11 August 2009 (CDT)

Very nice! Front page link! I think we should have separate pages for titania and dominion fields/dungeons/etc and I like the idea of using something similar to a disambiguation page on the original world map page. Let me see if I can set up a structure that makes it easier to navigate... --Arhon 21:23, 11 August 2009 (CDT)
I've created a couple navigation templates that may help. Not much but it's a start. I'm thinking we will have the world map, fields, and dungeon articles link to the different world-specific articles for each topic. But don't move them quite yet, let me put some more thought into it.
--Arhon 22:19, 11 August 2009 (CDT)
I've added the acronia template to all of the acronia pages, I'll wait until we have a little more information about the titania and dominion worlds before I break those up. But if you want to move them feel free, you have better sources than I do for world info. --Arhon 04:27, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

Wiki Ad

It took me a while to think of how to make it. I don't think it's too rad but I wanted to show it to you before I posted anything on On9G. It is easy to change anything in this pic so feel free to critique. Also the text in the purple box was authored without much passion XD I couldn't think of what to put so if you want me to write something else in there please tell me.

That looks real good! I say go for it. Don't forget to brag about how much info we already have hehe. --Arhon 23:57, 14 August 2009 (CDT)

Image Redirect and Hits Per Page

I noticed that with the new wiki, all the image redirects don't seem to work anymore... Not only that, but before I could have 5,000 hits show up in the recent-changes/search/user-contributions/logs pages. Is there no remedying these and we'll just have to do without? ~ Tasky 14:28, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

Oh, I didn't even notice that image redirects were broken. The new way is the link from the image itself For example:
will produce:
Smiley.svg
The link= has to be at the end of the image code. It is a far nicer system than the redirect system. I'll help update the maps images a little later. I never even tried to get anything larger than 500 from the recent-changes/search/user-contributions/logs pages, I guess they added a check. That ability is actually gone. :( --Arhon 15:10, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
Well, I can cope with seeing only 500 hits and I've added links to the world map and fields pages, but the dungeon page is a bit trickier... Is there a way to add links to the images if they're in a gallery like this?
Well, unfortunately the college's fall semester starts for me today, so I'll be back later. ~ Tasky 16:21, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
I couldn't figure out a way to add links to a gallery either, it does actually make sense, a gallery is supposed to just be an image gallery. So I changed images on the dungeons article to be formatted in tables. Good luck on your first day back in school :) --Arhon 18:37, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
True, that works. I need to get used to school hours again or else I'll be feeling tired. lol ~ Tasky 00:20, 19 August 2009 (UTC)
Wait until you get stuck in a soul crushing full time office job for years. Oh how I miss night time. The 9 to 5 gets old real fast lol. Arhontalk 00:48, 19 August 2009 (UTC)
Well, I think it's detailed for a signature. I might be looking forward to that, but I'm not a computer science or business major anyway... By the way, what things will trigger CAPTCHA? ~ Tasky 11:19, 19 August 2009 (UTC)
The sig thing is pretty easy - make a page like User:Arhon/Signature, then in the signature box in preferences add and check the "treat as wiki text" box. That's it. Arhontalk 19:23, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

CAPTCHA and Bots

The CAPTCHA is triggered when someone attempts to add an external link of any kind to a page. Or, change a link. Or even include a template with an external link. For example including the Template:Stub on a page will trigger the captcha because its edit link is constructed as an external link.

Apparently when the bots break on the captcha they fall back and just delete content. At least we're not getting those terrible spam links. But I'm not sure what to do with the Assassin article. It's not complete enough to protect it from anonymous users. I'm going to add one more anti-bot extension and see if it helps.

Arhontalk 19:23, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

Bah! It happened again as I was writing that last reply. I have protected the Assassin page from anonymous users. Registered users can still edit it. I didn't want to do that but it's just too annoying. Arhontalk 19:29, 19 August 2009 (UTC)
XD Yes thank you for protecting it it was going on all day!(And sorry for posting all those weapon stat templates in the clothing pages; was doing Tasky a favor and was in a rush :x (thanks for the new equipment templates!) --SkyWyvern 02:48, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
Yeah those bots are incredibly annoying. Luckily they are only attacking that one page, for now. Lets hope it stays that way. As for the template, it is probably missing some stuff, but that is all of the armor attributes that I could immediately confirm. If you notice anything missing please let me know (or just try to add it to the template). I'm going to work on a weapons template next. Maybe tonight, maybe tomorrow. Acceptable Uploadable File Types

I noticed the Upload File page says:
"Use the form below to upload files. To view or search previously uploaded files go to the list of uploaded files, (re)uploads are also logged in the upload log, deletions in the deletion log.
To include a file in a page, use a link in one of the following forms:
* to use the full version of the file
* to use a 200 pixel wide rendition in a box in the left margin with 'alt text' as description
* for directly linking to the file without displaying the file"

and yet media files like ogg and mp3 and swf aren't actually uploadable, so I was wondering if those would ever be one day. It'd be cool to have all the BGMs on the BGM page, or maybe that'd be too big an unrealistic, I don't know.

Oh, and those two BGM videos in the video section... Is it just a coincidence or did you know those were my videos? If it is, then that's pretty freaky... ~ Tasky 20:21, 22 August 2009 (UTC)

I'm working on OGG support right now. For some reason the extension brakes when I try to place an OGG on a page. Magic word issue, and I'm having a bear of a time figuring out what is causing it. It works on the file info page, but it wont hook up to the wikitext to show in articles.
I didn't realize those were your videos when I originally found them, but after reading the description I had a pretty good hunch =P Arhontalk 22:55, 22 August 2009 (UTC)
File:Speedsolving a 3x3x3 Rubik's Cube with Fridrich Method.ogg
Okay, that was a bloody nightmare. Someone had checked in a change to the mediawiki subversion that broke the extension. I managed to locate the problem code and revert it in my copy of the code.
I've now set up OGG file handling, I've added ogg, and mp3 to the valid upload list, and I've increased the upload file size limit to 10MB. OGG is relatively simple, I just had to install some software on the server to be able to take snapshots from the video, then install the same extension that is used on wikipedia. MP3 will take a little more doing, there are a couple decent tested extensions to support it. So I'll see if I can find one that is stable. The BGM files included with ECO are WMA format, I can't find any good browser based media players that handle that format. So they will have to be converted to OGG, or MP3 before they can be used on the wiki. Arhontalk 23:32, 22 August 2009 (UTC)
Awesome. We've got the power now. I don't mind converting all the wma to mp3. ~ Tasky 02:05, 23 August 2009 (UTC)
MP3 Player Enabled!
<flashmp3 id="1">DiamondCrevasse-violin.mp3</flashmp3>
See: FlashMP3 documentation. We are using the stand-alone (not lastfm) player. It supports playlists and up to something like 15 players on a page. Please never enable autoplay. lol Arhontalk 23:14, 23 August 2009 (UTC)
Is there anyway to circumvent the 15 player per page limit deal? Even so, this is definitely a big achievement! ~ Tasky 01:39, 26 August 2009 (UTC)
I can't even confirm that there is a 15 player limit, that's just what I read in a couple random comments about the extension. I'm sure you can have more than 15 songs in a single player, but a user would have to cycle through them to get to the one he/she wants. Arhontalk 01:56, 26 August 2009 (UTC)

Engrish and Gospel

I've read a couple of accounts saying that our wiki has a lot of "Engrish", but I've fixed up all the existing skill descriptions and job change quest descriptions so far, so that shouldn't be the case. Seeing as the only clients to quote would be Singaporean or Malayasian English, I'd say it's better not have things be "Gospel" or "verbatim" or "word-for-word", seeing as that's Engrish itself and it'd sound better to have an Engrish to English translation for descriptions in articles. Though, I suppose for map, item, and NPC names they will have to match the game in order to avoid confusion. After the dungeon and field articles are done I'm planning on writing an article with all 1746 synthesis recipes that include Item Purification, High Quality Refining, Woodcrafting, Cooking, Engineering, Potion Making, Throwing Weapon Crafting, Accessory Crafting, Weapon Crafting, Armor Crafting, Bow Crafting, Tailoring, Marionette Manufacturing, Scroll Making, Staff Crafting, Repair Kit Crafting, Gardening, and Unknown Recipes. This'll probably have to be broken up later on, too. ~ Tasky 21:36, 23 August 2009 (UTC)

On Engrish

Yeah, I haven't really been concerned with the simple english used on the site. And yes, "Simple English" is a language, it's what people actually use as english in south-east asia. I write my articles in full american english, because that's what I know best. But the game isn't american, the Run Up version is made for Singapore and Malaysia.
For excerpts from the game we want to match Run Up translations, Engrish though they may be. For the articles describing them we want to write the best english we can. But perfect American/British english is not the priority. We should try to write good english, but it isn't our highest duty =P.
Interesting EmilChronicle.com factoid:

Top 5 Countries - By absolute unique visitors in the last 30 days

Rank County Visitors Pages/Visit Avg. Time on Site
1. Indonesia 2,747 7.78 00:08:54
2. United States 1,811 22.07 00:17:01
3. Malaysia 489 19.48 00:15:57
4. Philippines 232 10.88 00:10:30
5. Canada 162 12.98 00:08:10
Indeed, 6,444 individual people from 49 countries across the world have come to the site in the last month alone. 86.34% of them have returned, way, way, WAY above the internet average. This means that people really like our articles! And that is a really awesome achievement.
But the point is our top audience doesn't even speak english as a native language. I suspect these numbers are a little skewed because Indonesia is having their ECO launch now. Expect the numbers to change when the english release goes into open beta, and live.
I know americans love to joke about Engrish, but the fact is that most english speakers in the world speak something other than american or british english.

On Recipes

Wow, that is a massive undertaking. I haven't even tried taking that one on yet. I've been working on a database dump of the skills, items, and monsters. But I need a better source, right now the best version I have is in chinese. I could just pass it through a translator, but that would be a whole new level of Engrish xD. I'll keep looking for a better source. Skill names are easy, those are included with the game client if you know how to get them ^_^ Monsters, items, etc are not, those are server side. So unless we can get an official dump from Run Up they will have to be translations. We can move/rename articles later if the Run Up translations differ from our own. Arhontalk 22:32, 23 August 2009 (UTC)
Those are some pretty impressive numbers, although I suppose that means we have a poor amount of edits versus visitors rating (the glass is half empty) lol. As for the method of unpacking the data files, I know there's something like that at [1] (a great site by the way), but I never really into it yet, although someone's asked me if they could have it. Do you have the means? ~ Tasky 04:21, 24 August 2009 (UTC)
Sorry for the delayed reply, it's been really busy today. We are actually doing pretty decent on editors. Wikipedia gets millions and millions of visitors, but they only have a couple thousand serious editors. We could certainly use more people, hopefully they will come in time. - Nice link, that's great site, and I would love to have some of those tools. But they are all password protected. You wouldn't happen to have the passwords would you? I have generic dat tools, but they aren't really any help. The only information that the client has that's worth gathering are skill names and descriptions. But we already have all of those. Arhontalk 19:40, 24 August 2009 (UTC)

Renamings

I noticed you made a bot and replaced names and then renamed the images. At first it freaked me out seeing the links broken in the field map and world map articles halfway through, I'll admit. hahaha I'm spent too much time studying lately and I'll finish work on the dungeons again later tonight, then the Titania and Dominion world stuff. Was "Fruit Forest" really correct? If it is I'm surprised I got so many to match the ID/SG/MY translations unintentionally, lol. I'm curious, how many and which things were renamed, since it seems like there were articles the bot just glossed over and didn't edit at all? That's just judging by showing the bot edits in recent changes. Better yet, I guess I could just look at the bot's contribs, huh?:S You were right, that was really really fast... By the way, do you happen to know if the other worlds are out in the current version? ~ Tasky 01:32, 26 August 2009 (UTC)

Hehe, I love automation! It probably was pretty shocking if you caught a page while it was working. Everything would be broken lol. This is why I want an official database dump so bad, if I could get a good dump in a standard format I could construct a bot to automatically post the entire thing in an hour or two. Furthermore, I could use the same bot to automatically update every item/monster/npc when a patch comes out. Oh what I wouldn't for an official, pre-tranlated data dump.
It looks like fruit forest was indeed used in the official translation. It's strange that the MY/SG/ID versions use such weird translations. More like paraphrasing than translating. "Snov" isn't even an english word, it russian.
Here is the search and replace list that I used:
North Coast -> Cape Northerin
Snowy Fork -> Snov Fork
Snowy Trail -> Snov Mountain Road
Snowy Field -> Snov Snowfield
East Coast -> East Cape
Fareast Highway -> Fareast Main Street
Fareast Street -> Fareast Main Street
Acronia Woods -> Acronia Forest
North Acronia Plains -> Northern Acronia Plains
East Acronia Plains -> Eastern Acronia Plains
East Acronia Beach -> Acronia Eastern Beach
South Acronia Plains -> Southern Acronia Plains
West Acronia Plains -> Western Acronia Plains
Calyx Lake -> Late Utena
Calyx Estuary -> Lake Utena Estuary
Desert Steppe -> Staff Desert
South Coast -> Cape Southerin
Undead Island -> Island of the Undead
Mosque Cliffs -> Mothgue Cliff
Battleship Territory -> Battleship Island
Iron South City -> Iron City
I don't think the dominion or titianian worlds are live in the current version, but I can't confirm.
Arhontalk 01:54, 26 August 2009 (UTC)
Well, it could be that the northerners are all Siberian themed people maybe? Like it's Czar kingdom? xD I think I tried more translating first then paraphrasing, but "Southerin"? Really? And I guess saying "of the Undead" makes it sound more epic... And I wonder if the whole Mothgue thing is sorta like the who aerith and aeris thing... lol ~ Tasky 02:30, 26 August 2009 (UTC)
Paraphrasing is a wonderful thing if you know your audience :) I suspect we will see a lot more of this with item/monster/npc names. Arhontalk 02:38, 26 August 2009 (UTC)
